The World Health Organization (WHO) has been fighting to contain the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which has killed 1,600 people since the outbreak started in August 2018. Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has declared the outbreak a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern” after a case was reported in Goma, a regional hub of two million people on the Congolese-Rwandan border. Several cases have also been identified in neighboring Uganda. The WHO hopes that this escalation of the official warning, only the fifth such declaration in history, will bring greater international attention and aid. Ebola poses an extreme risk to this region that is already struggling with violent conflict and human displacement.
