Trending Theme: Venezuelan Opposition Struggles to Win Loyalty of Military

The political situation in Venezuela has taken yet another turn after opposition leader Juan Guaidó made his boldest attempt yet on Tuesday by calling for an uprising alongside military personnel in hopes of toppling Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from power, but failed to win the loyalty of the Venezuelan military that the U.S. has for months urged to abandon President Maduro. On May 1, 2019, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that US military action in Venezuela is an option in the wake of this week's violent protests. The Trump administration remains confident that President Maduro will soon lose power, despite several failed attemps by opposition leaders to topple him thus far. The US is also pressuring Russia, China and Cuba over their support for the regime. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is scheduled to speak with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, to negotiate and hopefully come to a consensus on getting Russia and Cuba in allignment with US foreign policy regarding Venezuela.
