U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has stated that U.S is willing to hold new talks with Iran on the topic of the "Nuclear Deal" that the US withdrew from in 2018. Pompeo stated that such talks could be held with no preconditions and would help to ease to tensions between the two countries. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif later replied that further talks were very unlikely to happen and that the U.S. was only suggesting them as a means to put further pressure on Iran.
Iran said in May it would boost its enrichment of uranium beyond levels chosen under the international agreement if it could not within 60 days find a way to protect itself from the U.S. sanctions.
