The Sanctions Committee of the United Nations Security Council has listed Masood Azhar, the leader of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), as a global terrorist on May 1, 2019. JeM has claimed responsibility for the Pulwama suicide attack that killed 40 of India's Central Reserve Police Force soldiers and led to a spike in military tensions between India and Pakistan. UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres has expressed hope that all member states will abide by the decision of the Security Council's sanctions committee which imposed an arms embargo, asset freezes and travel ban on the Pakistan-based JeM chief Masood Azhar. India had been seeking Azhar’s listing as a global terrorist since 2008 and has characterized this development as a big win for the Modi government. It is now a matter of Pakistan upholding the UN sanctions and taking action to the curtailment of the JeM activities as a terrorist organization. There is also a potential that this development could lead to simmering of tensions between the two nations.
