In an ongoing debate around the legitimacy of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, tensions have risen to new levels. Maduro’s challenger, Juan Guaido, has been backed by the United States along with other Western powers. Thus far, Nicolas Maduro has the backing of Venezuela’s military and is supported by several nations including Russia and China. Maduro has stated that "We're ready to defend our homeland - under any circumstance." At the same time, the White House maintains that “all options are on the table.”
