Theresa May has announced that she will step down as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. In a speech in front of 10 Downing Street, Prime Minister May stated that she plans to step down from her post on June 7, 2019 and expressed “deep regret” that she had been unable to successfully deliver Brexit. Teresa May spent nearly three years as Britain’s Prime Minister with the majority of her post dominated by the Brexit debate. During this time, May’s attempts to negotiate a deal between Britain and the EU were rejected by British lawmakers three times. Her Brexit plan to include concessions aimed at attracting cross-party support proved unpopular in her own party. May’s announcement has triggered a contest for Britain’s next Prime Minister.
