Birgitte Bonnesen, CEO of the Swedish bank Swedbank, has been removed from her position as part of the fallout from the revelations of a $230 billion money-laundering scheme that used European banks such as Danske Bank, UNG Groep NV, and Deutsche Bank to launder suspicious funds. Swedbank had been found to have facilitated the transfer of roughly $23 billion between 2010 and 2016. Bonnesen’s departure was announced after Swedbank investors stated they had lost confidence in her following her early handling of the scandal.
Her departure makes her the second bank head to be a casualty of this scandal. She joins former Danske Bank head Thomas Borgen, who stepped down when the initial details of the scheme were made public last September.
