The United States Senate has voted to acquit President Donald Trump on two articles of impeachment filed by the House of Representatives. The vote went largely as expected and fell almost entirely along party lines, with the sole exception being Senator Mitt Romney of Utah, who voted with the Democrats in favor of removing the President from office. The two articles of impeachment alleged that President Trump abused his power and obstructed congressional attempts to conduct oversight over and investigations into the President’s actions regarding aid to Ukraine.
The White House has claimed that the vote represents a “total vindication” of the President. The House of Representatives, however, has vowed to continue to exercise its oversight authority and has hinted that the investigation into President Trump’s actions towards Ukraine may continue.
