A court in Montenegro has found 14 individuals guilty of intending to overtake the Montenegrin parliament, assassinate the Prime Minister, and establish pro-Russian leadership. This included two Russian military intelligence officers, two Montenegrin opposition leaders, nine Serbian citizens and one Montenegrin citizen. The coup attempt was planned for October 16, 2016, but prevented my Montenegrin police. It is believed that the coup attempt was organized by Russians, coordinated from Serbia, and intended to prevent Montenegro from joining NATO. Russia views the expansion of NATO as a provocation and has taken many proactive steps to prevent such action.
