Thousands gathered in cities across Russia to protest against new legislation that would impose tighter internet restrictions. Russian lawmakers argue that the restrictions will protect against foreign meddling in spite of protests. The new legislation seeks to route Russia’s internet traffic through state-controlled points, while also implementing a system that would allow the internet to continue functioning even if cut off from foreign attackers. This is not the first attempt by the Russian government to limit internet freedom. The Russian government has previously attempted to block access to certain websites, controlled search engines, and stored Russian users’ personal data on servers within the country. Activists worry that if they do nothing now, the situation will only worsen.
