North Korea has claimed that it tested a new tactical nuclear weapon with a “peculiar mode of guiding flight”. If true, this would be the first North Korean nuclear test in months, and the first test since the breakdown of the February 2019 Vietnam Summit between North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump. In addition to claiming a successful test, North Korea also called for US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to be removed from ongoing denuclearization talks and replaced with someone who will be “more careful and mature in dealing with [North Korea]”.
Officials from both South Korea and the US have said that they are working to verify the accuracy of the North Korean claim.
