On February 16th, 2019, Africa’s most populated country will be selecting their next president. The two front-runners in the presidential election are the incumbent, Muhammadu Buhari, and opposition candidate Atiku Abubakar. This election has gained a significant amount of attention and for good reason. Not only is Nigeria seen as a country of great potential, but this election could also set an example to follow in a continent with a reputation for volatile elections fraught with controversy. Thus both candidates have signed a peace deal and are urging their supporters to refrain from violent acts. Additionally, the candidates have agreed to support the credibility of the elections and accept the results regardless of the outcome. Hopefully, this election can set a precedent for free, fair, and credible elections in the future.
