Torrential rains, flash floods, and lightning strikes have killed at least 600 people in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Pakistan since the beginning of July. In Bangladesh alone, 3 million people across a third of the country are struggling with flooding and nearly 800,000 people have been displaced. Even as floodwaters recede, governments will need to address food shortages as swaths of agricultural produce have been wiped out. The risk of communicable illnesses also remains a threat as floodwaters aid in the spread of water-borne diseases. Meteorologists have warned of continued unstable weather throughout the week in several parts of the region.
