The US State Department has given approval for Lockheed Martin to sell 32 F-35 fighter jets to Poland, in a deal estimated at USD 6.5 billion. The F-35s purchased by Poland are intended to replace its current fleet of Mikoyan MiG-29 and Sukhoi Su-22 jets, both Russian-made. The deal is part of a larger strategy of cooperation between the United States and Poland, both NATO allies, to deter Russia in Eastern Europe. The deal will also aid Lockheed Martin in recovering lost revenue from the blocked sale of F-35s to Turkey.
