Juan Guaido, Venezuela’s opposition leader, has declared himself interim president in front of a crowd of supporters. Guido believes that his opponent, Nicolas Maduro, has no legitimacy, given that his elections were fraudulent. Guaido was almost immediately backed by several nations including the United States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia. Despite Guaido’s support from outside powers, Maduro currently has the support of the Venezuelan military, which could prove to be the deciding factor.
