India’s five-week long general election concluded on May 19, 2019. Early voting results show that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have won a decisive victory. With votes still coming in, opposition leader Rahul Gandhi of the Indian National Congress conceded to Prime Minister Modi, who will be entering his second term in office. The National Democratic Alliance, led by the Hindu nationalist BJP, is expected to win over 340 seats. Thus the BJP is expected to expand its majority in India’s 543-seat parliament. Critics of Prime Minister Modi argue that his focus on issues important to India’s Hindu majority will neglect India’s minority groups.
