India and the US have announced that they have agreed to a partnership on nuclear cooperation that will include the building of six new nuclear power plants across India. The move represents a significant step forward in India’s effort to triple its nuclear energy capability. This effort is intended both to address growing demand for power and also to reduce the country’s reliance on fossil fuels. The partnership between the two countries also pledges deeper cooperation between the two countries on issues pertaining both to nuclear civilian usage and bilateral security. Negotiations over the agreement have been taking place for over a decade.
