Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam has pledged to move forward with a controversial Chinese extradition law that critics fear will be used by Beijing to target political opponents. Her announcement comes a day after a record-breaking protest which saw one million people march in Hong Kong, a city of seven million. The extradition bill is widely seen as a major blow to the “one country, two systems” agreement that granted Hong Kong a high level of autonomy after its handover by the British in 1997. The protest comes at a time of rising fear and anger, with many citizens concerned about Beijing’s incursions into the city’s courts and media.
