Protests in France are now entering their second month. Named for the bright “yellow vests” of the protesters, the “Gilets Jaunes” protests began in mid-November as a response to a proposed diesel fuel tax that outraged many French workers. Since then, they have become a rallying point for other grievances such as income inequality and opposition to French President Emmanuel Macron. In response to the protests, President Macron has dropped the proposed fuel tax and has offered an increase in the minimum wage. However, protests remain ongoing across France and continue to draw tens of thousands of participants.
