Trending Theme: Former Comedian Holds Lead Heading into Ukrainian Elections

A former comedian holds a sizable lead in opinion polling as the weekend of the Ukrainian Presidential Election arrives. Comic actor Volodymyr Zelenskiy has no prior political experience, but he is famous in Ukraine for portraying a president in the television series “Servant of the People”. He is widely expected to defeat the incumbent President Petro Poroshenko in the run-off elections on April 21st as a result of the latter’s unpopularity.

The two candidates engaged in personal attacks on each in a final debate on Friday before the April 21st elections. Poroshenko claimed that his challenger was weak and would be unable to stand up to Putin. Zelenskiy countered by intimating that Poroshenko was corrupt and out-of-touch.
