Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is hosting world leaders in Osaka for the annual G20 Summit. Since 2015, the final communiqués drafted at previous summits have included mention of the Paris Agreement on climate change. This year’s draft communiqué prepared by the Japanese government has avoided terms such as “global warming” and “decarbonization” in an apparent acquiescence to the US, who pulled out of the landmark climate agreement in 2017. This comes at a time when Japan and the US are engaged in trade talks. French President Emmanuel Macron has asserted that he will not accept any final G20 communiqué that does not include the Paris Agreement.
