Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has approved of the controversial Trans Mountain Pipeline project which will carry an estimated one million barrels of oil from Alberta to Canada’s west coast each day. The pipeline will open up profitable markets in Asia while diversifying from the current major buyer, the United States. Along with the project’s approval, Trudeau committed to reinvesting the annual $500 million tax revenue generated from the pipeline into various clean energy projects. The Trans Mountain Pipeline has received backlash from leaders of each of Canada's major political parties and several indigenous groups. The pipeline decision comes not long after the House of Commons declared a “national climate emergency.”
