The UK’s Brexit Party holds a plurality of the vote among all parties standing to represent the United Kingdom in the European Parliament, according to a survey by YouGov. The poll, conducted on behalf of The Evening Standard newspaper, showed that the Brexit Party was polling at 27% of the vote, compared with 22% for the Labour Party and 15% for the Conservative Party. The Brexit Party was founded in January 2019 by Catherine Blaiklock, and it was soon joined by Nigel Farage, the former UK Independence Party leader who become one of the leading figures of the Brexit movement.
The UK was not initially slated to hold EU Parliamentary elections this year, as it was assumed that the country would have left the EU by the time the new parliament was to sit. As the deadline for Brexit has been pushed back to the end of October, however, the United Kingdom is obliged to send candidates to sit in the next European Parliament, which convenes in July.
The elections for the European parliament will take place from May 23 through May 26.
