Former London mayor, Boris Johnson, will become Britain’s next Prime Minister after winning 92,153 Conservative Party members votes to Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt’s 46,656. On July 24, 2019, Johnson will replace Prime Minister Theresa May, who announced her resignation in May 2019. Johnson has promised to follow-through with Britain’s exit of the European Union regardless of a finalized exit deal with the EU. Johnson’s victory was almost immediately welcomed by Donald Trump, who tweeted: “He will be great!”
In reaction to his victory, several key cabinet ministers, including the chancellor, Philip Hammond, said they will resign rather than serve under him. The European Union's Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said the bloc was ready to work with the incoming British prime minister for an orderly Brexit. Iran's Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, also congratulated his Boris Johnson while warning Britain that his country will protect Gulf waters. Boris Johnson will enter his new office during a time of rising tension between the United Kingdom and Iran.
